H2O Heroes: Empowering the Next Generation through WASH Education
ZCWD promotes water conservation and hygiene awareness among students
In celebration of its continuing advocacy for water conservation and public health, the Zamboanga City Water District (ZCWD), in partnership with Universidad de Zamboanga through the Safety, Health, and Environment Department (SHED), and Department of Health Regional Office IX – Center for Health and Development Zamboanga Peninsula successfully conducted the “H2O Heroes: WASH Orientation for Students – Empowering the Next Generation” on October 15 at the Rosa Hall, Universidad de Zamboanga Laboratories Building, Doña Josefina Street, Tetuan, Zamboanga City. The activity brought together young learners from various schools for a day of engaging discussions on the importance of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).
The event gathered students and teachers from Universidad de Zamboanga – Technical High School and Arturo Eustaquio Memorial Science High School, Southern City Colleges, Good Shepherd Training and Assessment Center, Inc., Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic State University, and Zamboanga City National High School – Main — all unified by the goal of becoming future champions of water conservation and health advocacy.
OIC-General Manager Atty. Mark Allen M. Paredes delivered the opening remarks, underscoring the critical role of youth in shaping responsible environmental behavior. “Students are our future Water Heroes,” he said, urging participants to embody water conservation and healthy hygiene practices in their daily lives. Atty. Paredes also expressed gratitude to the participating schools for their strong partnership in supporting ZCWD’s mission of promoting sustainable water use and public health awareness.
The orientation featured three interactive learning modules designed to deepen students’ understanding and encourage them to take active roles in water and hygiene advocacy:
Module I: “Potable Power: From the Source to the Tap” – Forester Jonas Rafael S. Galeos discussed the significance of watershed protection, while Allan Mark R. Ong of ZCWD explained the water treatment process and quality control measures that ensure clean, potable water reaches every household.
Module II: “Water Wonders: Saving Our Precious Resource” – Raul Ruben R. Rivera, Jr. presented practical and creative water-saving tips that students can apply at school and at home, highlighting the importance of mindful consumption.
Module III: “Handwashing Heroes: The Germ-Busting Superpower!” – Engr. Felvie B. Omnos, Head of the Environmental and Occupational Health Cluster of the Department of Health Regional Office IX, led an interactive demonstration on proper handwashing techniques and emphasized its vital role in disease prevention.
UZ SHED Officer Jessica C. Pacio delivered the closing remarks, encouraging students to put into practice the lessons gained from the seminar and to uphold safety, sanitation, and conservation in their everyday routines.
Through the H2O Heroes initiative, ZCWD continues to nurture the next generation of “WASH Ambassadors” — empowered students who champion the values of water conservation, sanitation, and health, ensuring that the flow of awareness continues across communities and generations.
